A discharge de-superheater can be used in a cooling plant to produce domestic hot water. This is possible when there is a simultaneous demand for both cooling and hot domestic water in the building.
A discharge de-superheater is a component inserted in the discharge line from a compressor to the condenser in a cooling plant. The discharge de-superheater can be any old type of heat exchanger, plate, shell and tube etc.A discharge de-superheater is useful in applications with simultaneous demands for both cooling and heating of hot water. The non-useful superheating of the refrigerant in the compressor can be converted into useful heating at a fairly high temperature.
The heat rejection from a reciprocating compressor normally is 8-10% of the total heat rejection. By installing a discharge de-superheater, is possible to produce hot tap water, hot water for central heating, hot water for HVAC units, etc. The achievable temperature on the hot water side can reach 50-60 °C for almost all refrigerants.
